TikTok Photo Mode Stills & AI Labels

Photo tab vs Video tab (do not mix the fix)

What TikTok ingests
What to clean
Photo mode
Each still JPG/PNG/WebP
Every slide (this page)
Video + custom cover
MP4 + one cover still
Cover here as a still; MP4 in the video guide
Video + auto cover
MP4; cover often a frame
Video guide first
A common mistake: following the cover-JPG steps from the general TikTok article, then uploading a Photo mode set where slides 2-8 were never cleaned. Photo mode has no single cover that “stands for” the post. One dirty slide labels the set.
Where Photo mode stills pick up tags
Typical stills people drop into Photo mode:
- Lightroom mobile AI Denoise or masking on shop photos
- iPhone Clean Up / Pixel Magic Editor, then TikTok picker
- Gemini / ChatGPT Image save used as a lifestyle slide
- Pixelcut or Photoroom export reused as a catalog frame (cutout is not the topic - the file is)
The camera roll picker shows a preview. TikTok reads bytes . If you edited in Lightroom, then saved, then picked the original from Recents, you posted the wrong file.
Lightroom stills: Lightroom Denoise and Instagram AI labels (same file logic; destination is TikTok Photo mode).
Photo mode workflow
- Finish edits in your still app. Export flat JPG or PNG.
- Do not send the set through WhatsApp “to myself.”
- Inspect the heaviest edit (the AI slide) in the AI metadata checker . If it has C2PA/XMP, assume siblings from the same session need the same pass.
- Strip C2PA and XMP on each Photo mode slide (up to 30 per browser session).
- In TikTok: Create → Photo (not Video). Attach only the cleaned files, in order.
- Do not apply in-app generative effects on a cleaned still and re-save - that can write new tags.
TikTok Shop product stills posted as Photo mode follow the same table: listing images are still rasters. Shop-specific copy lives on TikTok Shop product photos ; this page is the Photo mode composer path.
What not to do on this path
- ffmpeg / HandBrake - no video stream in Photo mode.
- Cleaning a screenshot of the labeled Photo mode post - you lose resolution and may keep tags.
- Cleaning only slide 1 because the general TikTok FAQ said “cover.”
- Switching the draft to Video after attaching stills and thinking the Photo mode clean still applies to the MP4.
After it is already live
TikTok does not let you edit metadata on a published Photo mode post. Re-export, clean every slide, create a new Photo mode post. The old one keeps its label unless you delete it. That republish rule is the same as video; the asset list is stills-only.
For metadata-driven Photo mode labels, strip C2PA and XMP on the stills you will attach, then publish from the TikTok stills tool . Browser-only; not a Settings toggle; not a pixel-watermark remover.
See Disclaimer .
Publish TikTok Photo mode stills without metadata-driven AI labels
Export each still, strip C2PA/XMP, upload only those files in Photo mode.
- Export stills - Save the JPG/PNG/WebP files you will attach in Photo mode - not a video export.
- Inspect one slide - Optional: run the AI metadata checker (/ai-metadata-checker) on the worst-case edit (Denoise, cutout, generative fill).
- Strip every slide - C2PA and XMP on each image. Batch up to 30.
- Post in Photo mode - Create → Photo (not Video). Attach only Social_Ready stills.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is TikTok Photo mode the same as a video cover thumbnail?
No. Photo mode uploads still images as the post. A video post’s cover is a separate JPG attached to an MP4. Clean Photo mode slides as stills; do not assume a video-cover workflow applies.
Why did Photo mode show contains AI generated media on real products?
Each still is scanned. Lightroom AI Denoise, Gemini saves, or cutout-app XMP on one slide can label the whole Photo mode set.
Do I re-encode an MP4 for Photo mode?
No. Photo mode has no video stream. Browser still-image cleanup is the right tool. Re-encoding MP4 is for video posts only.
Can I turn Photo mode AI labels off in TikTok settings?
There is no reliable in-app toggle while C2PA or AI XMP remain in the stills you upload. Strip those fields on every slide first. Remove AI Label Team
